  • Part 3 Pandemic focus: Interview with Integrative Pharmacist Nic Parkes

Driving towards Weleda pharmacy, I was struck by its beautiful surroundings and relaxed immediately. My favourite picturesque vineyard, Black Barn lives next door and the speed limit of 20km/h encouraged me to appreciate my surroundings. I noticed 2 large herb gardens, some hungry cows grazing on the vineyard grasslands as I parked by the pharmacy and shop. What a beautiful place for healing and recovery.

A friend provided the contact that made way for my interview with Nic Parkes, the Chief Pharmacist and co-owner of Weleda Pharmacy. Weleda Pharmacy is based on an integrative complementary system combining allopathic with anthroposophic and homeopathic medicine. She described anthroposophic medicine as a Western traditional medicine integrated with evidence-based medicine combined with spiritual science.

Illness is seen as an opportunity for human development and medicines support the individual’s self-healing capacity.

The pharmacy is staffed by registered pharmacists, a team of Pharmacy technicians trained in holistic health, Medical Herbalist and Naturopath who support the Weleda doctors. All health professionals have vocationally recognised qualifications and additional training in anthroposophic medicine. Most of the medicines produced are plant extracts or use energetics.

In the last 10 years, Nic followed her calling to help others self-heal with anthroposophic medicine. She works closely with Weleda doctors in Australia and New Zealand. When asked how she felt about getting jabbed (The New Zealand government mandated all health workers to be vaccinated by mid-December), she described how having a calling made it easier, you do what you have to do, and you’re walking the same journey as your patients, and hoping to transform whatever’s happening to you for the greater good.” Luckily she has the expertise and know-how to neutralise any potential adverse consequence of the jab.

It was a chance discussion with another doctor that resulted in the mRNA vaccine support pack they produced. It contains 2 ingredients that is based on energetics, quartz to stabilise cell wall and stibium to support endothelial membranes. The 1st ingredient is taken 7 days before the jab and the 2nd ingredient is taken 7 days after.

Energetics is a concept very new to me however with the pandemic, I was open to new ideas. Nic explained that there were no contraindications and feedback has been positive. Clients who have used it report higher tolerance to the vaccine. Nic also recommends the rosemary bath milk used as a foot soak to help reduce the fatigue associated with the jab. Weleda ships to both Australia and NZ. You can order it here.

Micronutrient support is essential and Nic recommends vitamin D 4000-5000IU daily, zinc (elemental 40mg) daily, vitamin C, NAC 500mg up to three times daily and quercetin. Very close to my Top 3 Supplements to Boost your immune system guide here.

I went away inspired to learn more about anthroposophic medicine, started by Rudolf Steiner in 1920 and is an accepted practice in Europe. You can read more here.

On my way out, I took the opportunity to check out the Weleda shop. They stock a wide range of anthroposophic and homeopathic medicines along with the Healing Herb range of Dr Bach’s Flower Essences, a range of nutritional supplements and of course, all of Weleda’s natural and organic skin care products. I am a fan of Weleda’s aurum/lavender/rose ointment: you rub it around your heart area to reduce stress. The aromatherapy is soothing and soon takes me to sleep.
