Hello and welcome to our podcast, where we bring you inspiring stories from health practitioners who have transformed their own health or their clients. Today, we have with us Shannon Swales, a clinical psychologist who suffered a mental breakdown due to burnout. Shannon recognized the signs and symptoms of burnout in herself and took the necessary steps to recover. She has since quit her job and now focuses on helping others who are struggling with burnout. In this episode, Shannon will share her personal experience with burnout and help us understand the warning signs, risk factors, and when to seek professional help.
What is my burnout story?
But before we dive into Shannon’s journey, I want to share a bit about my own experience with burnout and how it led me to connect with Shannon’s work.
I discovered Shannon’s work when I attended her transformative event called ‘When Burnout Becomes Reality.’ Little did I know that I was about to have a profound realization about my own well-being. It dawned on me that I had been suffering from burnout in my previous job without even realizing it. I used to believe it was my fault, that somehow I wasn’t doing enough or I lacked the resilience to handle the demands. However, attending Shannon’s event helped me understand that my experience was not solely about me. It was a reflection of how I felt like being undervalued and unappreciated by the organization. My ideas and personal attributes were consistently shut down, and I felt as though I was being treated like a child instead of the capable adult I truly am.
My journey towards overcoming burnout took a different path from Shannon’s, leading me to embrace my true potential. It wasn’t an easy decision to leave the security of a regular paycheck. Stepping into the roles of a Healthpreneur, Health Coach, and Podcaster was far beyond my comfort zone. However, after spending over 20 years specializing in educating health professionals on evidence-based medicine, I knew I was capable of so much more. I had reached a point where I craved growth and development and hence, here I am.
Today, I’m honored to have Shannon join us on the podcast. Her expertise and insights into burnout will help us better understand the signs and symptoms, when to seek professional help, and the risk factors associated with this all-too-common issue. Together, we aim to increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of burnout and signpost some self-care routines and when to seek help. So, without further ado, let’s welcome Shannon and delve into this crucial conversation about burnout prevention and recovery.
