Hi friends, and welcome to my very first solo episode!
Today we’re diving into a fascinating tool that’s helped me—and many of my clients—unlock a more personalised path to wellness: DNA analysis. Whether you’ve been curious about how it works, wondering if it’s worth it, or feeling overwhelmed by all the science, this episode is for you.
In this episode, you will discover:
- How DNA analysis and genetic testing for health work
- The impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) like the COMT and MTHFR genes
- Why some people need anti-inflammatory nutrition, special supplements, or different diets
- Strategies in personalised wellness, lifestyle medicine, and precision supplements
- The importance of accredited DNA labs and genetic privacy
- Tips on stress regulation, sleep optimisation, and habit change for energy and vitality
- The science behind nutrigenomics, chronic disease prevention, and holistic health strategies
- How technology—like DNA analysis and food tracking apps—can make change effortless
- My health coaching philosophy: “DNA is not your destiny. It’s information that empowers your next steps!”
What Is DNA Testing & How Does It Work?
Let’s start with the basics.
DNA is like your body’s instruction manual. It’s made up of four chemical letters—A, T, C, and G—and you inherit half from your mum and half from your dad. Together, they create a one-of-a-kind blueprint for your body, including how you metabolise nutrients, handle stress, respond to medications, and even how you sleep.
DNA testing, usually done with a simple cheek swab, looks at tiny variations called SNPs (or single nucleotide polymorphisms). These small tweaks in your code don’t usually cause disease—but they can influence how your body functions.
For example:
- Why some people thrive on a high-fat diet while others don’t
- Why caffeine makes you jittery or sleepy
- Why stress hits harder for some than others
- And why certain supplements or medications work better for you than for someone else
From Science to Strategy
In my own practice, I always start with the foundations: anti-inflammatory nutrition, movement, stress regulation, sleep, and mindset.
But for people who want to go deeper, DNA testing offers a roadmap. It helps fine-tune your approach to health—making it more effective and sustainable.
For example, if your genes show you clear neurochemicals quickly, like the COMT gene, you may burn through dopamine faster, leading to burnout. That insight helps us support your brain with the right nutrients—like tyrosine or green tea extract—and adjust your lifestyle accordingly.
Or maybe you’re a slow coffee metaboliser—meaning that morning latte is messing with your sleep, stress, and blood sugar more than you think.
Or perhaps you’ve got a reduced ability to activate folate due to the MTHFR gene, meaning you need active forms of B vitamins and to avoid synthetic folic acid in fortified cereals or breads.
I always remind clients: DNA is not your destiny. It’s information. And when you use that information wisely, it can empower real change.
Pros of DNA Testing
- Removes guesswork from health decisions
- Personalises your diet, supplements, and lifestyle
- Helps you understand why you feel the way you do
- Provides long-term value—you only need to do it once
- Supports prevention and performance, not just disease treatment
Cons & Caveats
- It can be overwhelming—there’s a LOT of data
- Not all tests are created equal—quality matters
- Interpretation is key—you need someone who gets it
- It may not tell you the exact supplement dose you need
- For some, it can bring up unexpected or emotional discoveries
And yes, there’s a cost—most DNA tests are around $400–$600, which can be a stretch. But if you’re ready for a strategic, long-term approach to your health, I believe it’s a wise investment.
Quality Matters
If you decide to do DNA testing, please choose a provider whose lab meets strict quality standards—like CLIA or ISO 15189 accreditation. This ensures the results are accurate and reliable.
Also, read the privacy policy. Your genetic data is sensitive—make sure it’s protected and won’t be sold or used without your consent.
Action Steps You Can Take
Even if you’re not ready for DNA testing yet, here’s what you can start doing today:
- Prioritise real, whole foods with anti-inflammatory benefits
- Get consistent, gentle movement
- Support your sleep—it’s foundational for pain and mental health
- Practice stress regulation—breathwork, meditation, prayer
- Be curious about your patterns, not judgmental
- Work with a practitioner who listens and personalises your plan
I believe DNA testing can be a game-changer—but only when it’s used as part of a holistic, thoughtful strategy.
